Local traditions in Chablais
Chablais is a set of cities which work and develop together (Yvoire, Sciez, Allinges, Thonon-les-bains…) and in this Chablais there is an idea of conviviality that is why many cities and municipalities organize traditional events which all have their importance.
Here are some examples:
In Thonon-les-Bains: in April, every two year 'Matagasse' takes place :
It is a celebration of the beginning of the spring, we celebrate the spirit of king Matagasse there and his exuberant procession is the start of party time in Thonon! About thirty groups by foot, in tanks and in music travel the city at the rate of the explosive brass bands.
The city of Thonon is nevertheless multi-purpose; it also organises during the summer Friday evenings a kind of market and of boot sale.
But the most essential tradition in the city is the fair of Crête: it was created in 1477, Peasants used to meet there to exchange goods and animals once a year. it is now an immense fair mixing food stalls and attractions, it is the appointment of the young people!
In Yvoire : The beginning of October
To enclose the season the local associations, organize the Party of Donkeys. Walk on hogback, drawing competitions, beauty contest, apple juice making, throwing of bales of straw competition, parades...
In Evian-les-bains : On Tuesday and Friday morning the city of Evian proposes a very big market.
But Evian is not the only city to have a market, there are also the markets of Thonon on Monday and Thursday morning. The market of Sciez on Thursday mornings. The market of Bellevaux every Monday morning. The market of Douvaine every Sunday morning … Christmas markets in Evian, Thonon, Sciez …
Our Chablais is a very beautiful and very multi-purpose region which proposes a nice way of life.
